INTRODUCTION

The Coast Region was established in 2023 to address peace and cohesion concerns in the Coast Region. It covers a geographical scope of six (6) counties. These counties are Tana River, Mombasa, Lamu, Kilifi, Kwale and Taita Taveta.

The regional office is situated in Mombasa city and is tasked with implementing the NCIC mandate of facilitating and promoting equality of opportunity, good relations, harmony and peaceful coexistence between persons of different ethnic, racial and religious communities Kenya that are specific to the citizens in the Coast Region

The Regional Office focuses on among others public outreach and engagement, peacebuilding and reconciliation and receiving of complaints. The office conducts various thematic trainings to citizens, institutions and grassroots Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

KEY FOCUS AREAS

  • Public Outreach and Engagement

Pursuant of section 25 (2) (d) provisions of the NCIC Act 2008 the Commission is responsible for ensuring ethnic and racial harmony through planning supervising, coordinating and promoting educational and training programmes to create public awareness, support and advancement of peace and harmony among ethnic communities and racial groups.

Hence the Regional Office undertakes trainings of both State and non-State actors, dissemination of IEC materials, public awareness forums, and exhibition in fairs and open days. They also participate in peacebuilding events and activities, networking and partnership with local CSOs involved in peace related programmes and activities.

  • Peace Building and Reconciliation

Pursuant of sections 25(2) (g) provisions of the NCI Act, 2008, the Commission is responsible for securing and enhancing ethnic and racial harmony and peace through promoting arbitration, conciliation, mediation and similar forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms.

The Regional responsible for engaging, educating and capacity building of key stakeholders to contribute positively to the achievement of peaceful and harmonious coexistence among communities in the region. In addition, the Regional office is responsible for Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) towards a peaceful harmonious society.
