For several months this year, clashes have been experienced in Transmara West, Kilgoris Sub County. The conflict has been between the Siria and Wuasi Nkishu Maasai sub clans residing along the borders of Enoosean and Nkuraro areas of Kilgoris. To restore peace in the area, the Commission alongside other partners such as Anglican Church of Kenya have hosted inter-clan mediation meetings in a bid to understand the drivers of conflict and propose solutions that would restore lasting peace. On 22nd and 23rd September, 2020, the Commission through the Peace building and Reconciliation department, hosted a few elders and youth from the two pitting communities and got to understand the causes of conflict and recommended several solutions in resolving the underlying issues. It was resolved that women need to be involved in peace building matters as they are a key stakeholder in conflict resolution.

The youth need to be actively engaged and economically empowered as this would ensure they are not idle and engaging in destructive activities in the community. More so, the leaders from the two communities need to continue engaging and finding ways of having sustainable peace in the region, while amicably resolving the main issue at hand which is the land tussle. Community engagement in the area will continue over the coming months with an endeavor to have the two communities live in peace and united.

The Commission including other local stakeholders have intervened in both conflicts, in Trans Mara West and Olpusimoru. In Transmara West sub-County, the Anglican Church of Kenya continues to host inter-clan mediation meetings at ACK Church of Faith in Kilgoris. These discussions are attended by all chiefs and clergy from the Wuasi Nkishu and Siria clans and mediated by elders, chiefs and clergy from the Moitanik clan.

NCIC recognizes the role of elders in peace building, thus   on 22nd September, 2020 a section of elders were sensitized on their role in peace building in Kilgoris, Transmara Sub County
