In a bid to end the intermittent conflicts that have been witnessed between communities and or clans in Marsabit County over the years, NCIC in partnership with Pact Kenya, Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) and Drylands Learning and Capacity Building Initiative (DLCI) have initiated a peace process to find lasting peace in the county. To kick start the process, the partners led by NCIC Chairman, Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia met with the Cabinet Secretary, National Treasury and Planning, CS Hon. Amb. Ukur Yatani, Marsabit County Governor, H.E Mohammed Mohamud Ali and several members of the national assembly from the larger North Eastern region on 12th September, 2020.
From this meeting, the leaders in one voice confirmed their commitment to the peace process initiated by NCIC. It was agreed that a committee of respected persons would be nominated to work with the Commission to steer peace efforts in Marsabit County. Following nomination of the 14-member committee, the Commission and its partners held a two-day induction forum on 28th and 29th September, 2020 in Marsabit town.
The objective of the forum was to ensure the nominated members are acquainted of their mandate and responsibilities while also drawing a roadmap of the Marsabit Peace Process. The 14 committee members are drawn from the Boran and Gabra ethnic groups (seven from each group) and will be at the forefront of realizing and bringing peace in the region, while working closely with NCIC, Pact Kenya, FCDC, DLCI and other partners. It is envisioned that the peace process will be done in a span of one year.
