Kiambu County
Kiambu County is made up of twelve sub-counties namely, Githunguri, Kiambaa, Lari, Limuru, Kabete, Gatundu North, Gatundu South, Juja, Kikuyu, Thika town, Ruiru and Kiambu Town. Kiambu. Amani clubs were established in 2016 and several schools have functional and vibrant Amani clubs that engage in activities that promote peaceful co-existence.
Amani Club Activities
Peace Corners:-Most schools in the county have established peace Corners and also established tree nurseries in the school compounds. The peace corners have become very good platforms discussing peace issues as well as resolving conflicts among students.
Tree Planting-Amani Club members from different schools in the County together with Kenya Forest Research Institute, Kenya Forest Service engaged in a tree planting exercise at Menengai Forest. This was done to avert conflicts emerging from the environmental degradation as well as conserving forest resources in Kiambu County.
Community work- Amani Club members participated in cleaning up various market centers like Soko Mjinga, Nyambari, Limuru town, Nairobi, Naivasha town, Kiambu town to environmental hygiene. Bathi secondary students undertook voluntary cleaning of Lari Level Four Hospital and also visited Mukeu Home for the disabled, Nyanduma.
Drama and Theartre – Amani clubs have embraced creative arts as one of the strategies of communicating peace and cohesion messages. A case in point is that Bathi Girls Secondary school developed an item titled ‘Manifesto’ with a theme on national cohesion and presented it during the drama festivals at Alliance High school. In addition peace clubs members composed Amani Poems and songs and recorded some of them. These poems and songs were recited and sang reciting during public holiday forums in the county. Other peace activities that the members engage include peace walks, peace forums and workshops.
Results
- Cohesion and peace activities embraced in schools and the neighbouring communities
- Peer mediation structures established and being utilized by the students.
- Enhanced peaceful environment through promotion of peaceful coexistence.
