Migori County
Migori County comprises of 10 Sub-Counties namely, Rongo, Awendo, Suna east, Suna West, Uriri, Nyatike, Kuria East, Kuria West, Ntimaru and Mabera. The County has a homogeneous population which includes, Suba-Luos, Luos, Kuria, Kisii’s, Luhya, Somalis, small pockets of Indians, Arabs, and Nubians. The key peace and cohesionchallenge in the region is cattle rustling amiong the Maasai and Kuria communities. The Commission established amani clubs in the county in 2015 and since then schools in the region have been undertaking several peace and cohesion related activities.
Amani Club Activities
Tree Planting Activities-Amani club members protect and improve their environment by establishing tree nurseries, cleaning their surroundings and beautification projects. This activity aids in the reduction of resource based conflicts that may also occur within the community. The following schools have taken part in the activity; Migori Boys High School, Sagegi Secondary School, Nyango Secondary School, Onyalo Secondary School, Taranganya High School, Gokeharaka Secodary, Sori Secondary School, Bande Girls Secondary School, St. Alberts Ulanda Girls Secondary School, Nyabisawa Girls High School, Ntave primary, Chrisco academy, Oruba Primary and St. Annes Isibania Boarding High School.
Community Service and Volunteerism -Taking part in peace through service and volunteer projects foster a culture of altruism and inclusiveness transcending religion, race, and nationality, and tapping into the potential of this rising generation. Such activities may include charity work, handing out donations, town and hospital cleanups.The schools that have been involved in such projects are; Kadika Girls Secondary, Migori Boys High School, Ngege School, Sori Secondary, St. Albert Ulanda Girls, Kanyawanga Boys, Oyugi-Ogango girls Secondary, St. Pius Uriri Boys High and Oruba Girls Secondary School. Other key activities conducted in the county include, launch of Peace Torches caravans and walks, sporting activities, income generating activities and partnership with other organizations.
