Hate mongers on social media warned

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Commissioners through a press conference held on 14th July 2017 noted with concern the increasing ethnic and political polarization and proliferation of hate speech on vernacular radio stations and social media.

While addressing the media, NCIC Vice Chairperson, Commissioner Irene Wanyoike, said that the Commission had intensified its monitoring and investigations of hate speech/incitement to violence, both online and offline. It was reported that a total of 31 cases were under prosecution in various courts across the country, with 30 more cases under various stages of investigations.At least 176 social media accounts were identified and flagged out as most common perpetrators of hate speech.

“We have intensified our crack down on the hate mongers and several arrests have been made, while others are on the way. We are also working with the Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and other law enforcement agencies to flash out and arrest the hates,” she said.
