“RECONCILIATION AS PROCESS AND PRACTICE” TRAINING

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission on 13th August 2012 launched the project Promoting National Cohesion and Reconciliation in Kenya. This project is implemented in partnership with the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) based in Cape Town South Africa and the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) based in Stockholm Sweden. The project is designed to enhance capacities of stakeholders at the national and local levels to enable sustainable engagement on reconciliation issues and influence policy and programming from a reconciliation perspective. Other activities to be conducted under the project are; 5 Policy briefs which will in the next two years address topical issues appertaining to reconciliation in the Country, and 5 training activities on reconciliation targeting a diverse range of national and local stakeholders.

The first training is currently ongoing at the Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha from 14th – 17th August 2012. This training targets senior government officials from the various State and National Institutions. It aims at enhancing the capacity of State institutions and officials to contribute to sustainable reconciliation processes by, among other things; developing a conceptual understanding of reconciliation from a local perspective, reinforcing the importance of core values for reconciliation, promoting an understanding of the role of the various State institutions for reconciliation and the potential for collaboration, and empowering stakeholders to engage in and support the National Reconciliation agenda/strategy.

Those present include officials from the following institutions: Ministry of Lands, Communications Commission of Kenya, Law Society of Kenya, Judiciary, The Kenya Police, Public Service Commission, National Steering Committee on Peace Building and Conflict Management, National Gender and Equality Commission, Ministry of Planning, National Development and Vision 2030, and the Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission which is represented by Ms. Tecla Namachanja,
