International Women's Day, observed annually on March 8th, is a global celebration that recognizes and honors the achievements, contributions and progress of women throughout history. This day is a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for gender inclusion and equality, highlighting the importance of empowering women in all spheres of life. It is based on the United Nations 68th Commission on the Status of Women priority theme “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”.

The origins of International Women's Day can be traced back to the early 20th Century, when women began demanding their rights and challenging societal norms. The first National Women's Day was organized by the Socialist Movement in the United States of America on February 28, 1909. The idea gained international momentum and in 1910, the International Women's Conference in Copenhagen proposed the establishment of an annual celebration to advocate for women's rights. The first official International Women's Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
Women have historically played significant roles in peacebuilding efforts in Africa, often at the grassroots level, where they have demonstrated their ability to bring communities together, promote dialogue and address the root causes of conflicts. Their unique perspectives and experiences offer valuable insights into conflict prevention and resolution. In a family setup, women are the peacemakers at home and the community at large.

In a vibrant display of solidarity, the NCIC Central Rift office joined Nakuru County and the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day at the Deputy County Commissioner’s grounds in Keringet town in Kuresoi, Nakuru County.
